Jim Proctor
Lake Lure Native.Welcomes the World.
Jim is a Lake Lure native who cherishes his home place where he lives today with his wife Robin and their two children. His home, Pine Gables, is listed on the National Historic Registry, and has been owned by Jim’s family for more than one hundred years.
He attended Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC, earning a B.A. in Intercultural Studies with a focus on Education and Asia with a Minor in Art. Additionally, he studied sociology and psychology. Jim’s studies included travel to India and Nepal where he did volunteer work in Nepal, building a solar water heater for a community laundry. He was also an observer at various schools, studied the Nepali language and organized a trek to the Base Camp in the Himalayan Mountains
He has enjoyed a diverse and interesting business career as a Youth Counselor Technician for the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice system and then became a Land Survey Crew Leader where he honed his knowledge and immense skills in researching land title, calculating and plotting survey plats/maps, processing topographic maps/plats and using GPS to locate and document specific land positions. He is a source of unlimited land knowledge.
Jim’s entrepreneurial spirit then led him to President and General Manager of one of Asheville’s most creative and unique retail stores in north Asheville, called Dancing Bear Toys. He then came full circle back to Lake Lure where he handled the resort maintenance at the family’s Pine Gables cottages. Subsequently he earned his North Carolina Real Estate Broker license in ’84 and has been active ever since in sales and listings, land and commercial properties, and managing resort and commercial rental properties.
In addition to his real estate career Jim was the Mayor of Lake Lure 1999 to 2010. His accomplishments have been many in this leadership role. His extraordinary communication skills combined with his leadership skills, intellect, and boundless energy allow him to succeed at every task he undertakes.
His hobby is amateur photography, but his work is anything but amateur. Jim’s work has been published in several local magazines and newspapers and he has shown framed photography in juried art shows.
Jim Proctor gives back to his childhood community. He is on numerous important Boards regarding Land Conservancy, organization to protect Chimney Rock Park, Wilderness conservancy and so many others to numerous to list here!
Growing from a young boy to a young man Jim’s life was shaped by his activity in scouting; Cub, Boy Scout & Exploring, where he earned the God and Country Award, Star Achievement Award, and the Brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow Award. The values and ethics learned in his youth have carried into adulthood in service to others, head and shoulders above the rest.
