Wes is an Asheville native and a graduate of the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he spent two years in the US Navy. His duties included personnel officer on an oil tanker and officer-in-charge of a PT boat.

He then enjoyed a successful business career in New York City as National Accounts Officer with Irving Trust Co. where he was in the National Division traveling to Iowa, Illinois and Minnesota.

He returned to his hometown of Asheville in 1970 and presided as President & Treasurer of his own company called Smoky Mountain Petroleum. Wes has been real estate licensed since 1980 and also has a N.C. Heating and Air Conditioner Contractor License. His wife, Linda, is a registered pharmacist and is currentlywith the Fullerton Genetics Center coordinating the Folic Acid Education Campaign of WNC. They reside in south Asheville with their two sons and attend Central United Methodist Church.

Wes is known for his "follow up and follow through". His public service activities are a testament to that. He has served on the Buncombe County Hazardous Waste Committee of the Environmental Affairs Board, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce; as Director, Chamber Mart Chairman, Training and Seminar\'s Committee, Aviation Committee Chairman and Economic Development Committee. Additionally, Wes was active in the Sales and Marketing Executives Club and served as President and as a Director and was named "Sales Executive of the Year" in 1994. He also has served the Better Business Bureau as Chairman & Director and the Asheville Merchants Association as Director he worked with the Asheville Jaycees for six years and the Daniel Boone Council-Boy Scouts as District Chairman - Saquo District.
